HBO co-president Eric Kessler has said he thinks the move away from traditional television to an internet-based model is just a fad that will pass – a “temporary phenomenon” tied to the down economy.

I think Eric Kessler, too, is just a fad that will pass. :-) He's delusional, showing the exact attitude that made the music industry the loser of the last decade. Yet, I can understand how a music industry CEO could get it wrong 10 years ago. How you still can get it wrong in 2012 is a mystery to me.

It's a mystery that I also encounter with small business clients who have a hard time understanding that static web sites and zero social media is cutting them off from where the world is going.

As a business owner or CEO you need to look ahead a little, and make sure your're biz isn't turning into a dinosaur. Failing to do so is not only missing opportunities, it's risking the extinction of your business, even the extinction of whole industries.

If HBO doesn't change their attidtude, they'll be extinct, too. And a newcomer will happily rake in the profits, like Apple is now raking in the profits that the music industry, with just a little foresight, could have kept to itself.

Change brings opportunities. Don't miss out!
#ibmm
#gamofthrones #hbo #business

HBO's 'Game of Thrones' is on its way to becoming the number one pirated show in America. Of course, they have only themselves to blame for this.

Google plus will be integrated big time into Google news. I have previously seen the authorship info on Google news articles, with link to the news' author's g+ profile. #ibmm
Screenshot of g+ authorship info on Google News page here:
http://internetbusinessmastermind.com/google-plus-profiles-enhancing-google-news-i-knew-they-showed-up-in-search-results

Today they announced several changes to Google news, making g+ more prominent on the news page. See the red dot top right of the screen shot below? That's g+ on the news page.

I watch g+ closely, engagement still is a joke compared to Facebook. Even 'social media celebrities' like +Guy Kawasaki and +Mari Smith get much more engagement on Facebook, than on g+.

Just an example: I compared engagement for a post that +Guy Kawasaki posted to g+ and Facebook.

On Facebook Guy got 1 Like per 1,602 subscribers.
On g+ he got 1 +1 per 37,233 subscribers.

Facebook: 1 comment per 3,750 subscribers.
Google plus: 1 comment per 87,498 subscribers.

The difference is shocking!

You can see the results as infographic here, also for Mari Smith and +Robert Scoble.

http://internetbusinessmastermind.com/facebook-vs-google-plus-engagement-infographic

Just 2 days ago +Chris Brogan said it loud and clear at #SMSS12 : Google plus pages aren't critical to have, engagement is very low.

But Google will be pushing g+ until hell freezes over.

Next week's changes at Google news are proof of that. Eventually people will be so tired that they sign up. As my Borg friends like to say: "Resistance Is Futile!"

If the engagement at g+ ever goes where we would like to see it? I'm not sure.

Here's the link to Google's announcement about the changes for Google news:

Here's the story: Every time someone calls Google plus a 'ghost town' I get defensive and explain how great Google plus is. I tell them how everybody is getting Google wrong. Just like many fellow Google plus users with me.

We've dissed Journalists who were writing about low Google plus engagement.

We've suspected them of getting paid by Facebook.

We bombarded the wall of g+ critics with malicious comments.

Hey, at least there's some engagement!

If you want to get slapped, go and send a message out saying 'Google plus is a ghost town,' or 'Engagement on Google plus is unbelievably low.'

Then, a few weeks back, I started to lookout for Google plus content that Plussers posted to their Facebook wall as well. And I looked at how many likes, comments, and shares they get on both platforms.

Then I looked at how many followers they have. And I crunched the numbers, with surprising results.

Here are 3 examples for prominent social networkers and how their fans engage on Facebook and Google plus.

With Mari Smith's numbers you may still think 'so what?'

When you see Robert Scoble's numbers you'll be surprised.

When you see Guy Kawasaki's numbers, you'll be in tears (if you're a Google plus evangelist) or rolling on the floor laughing (if you're a Facebook fan, or Mark Zuckerberg).

The numbers below are for a specific post that was posted to Google plus and to Facebook on the same day. The numbers were taken a few days after the post, when activity had died.

(Sorry for the excessive ibmm branding, I pulled 9 separate graphics together on this page.)

Mari's numbers are interesting, because she has roughly the same number of subscribers on both social media sites. It must be said, though, that the post on Facebook was posted to her Fan Page, not to her personal profile. Mari Smith has many more subscribers on her profile.

But I needed to compare numbers for the same content on g+ and Facebook, and this piece was posted to the fan page.

Source:
This is the post for which I compared the numbers:
https://plus.google.com/112707199408484711520/posts/QfyCJHe9BRT

Here's Mari Smith's Facebook Fan Page:
http://www.facebook.com/marismith

Robert's results for this post vary more than Mari's. For likes this post's results are much worse, for shares the results are better. This is pretty rare, though.

While Mari Smith has similar audience size (remember, it's only her Facebook Page), in Robert's sample the g+ audience is much larger.

Many people say that larger following will result in less engagement.

Source:
Robert Scoble's Google plus post:

And Robert's Facebook profile:
http://www.facebook.com/RobertScoble

Did I check the wrong post? Is it an outlier?

These numbers are so extreme that I wanted to make sure I didn't catch an outlier. I checked with CircleCount. The results above are in line with Guy's average results over the last 30 days. Average is 28 comments per posting, 19 reshares per posting, and 66 +1's per posting; with currently 1,912,115 followers.

Guy Kawasaki's numbers are way off, in two ways.

Compared to Facebook, the engagement numbers are unbelievably low on Google plus.

Looking at the posts of Mari and Guy on Facebook, his engagement numbers are also way down, compared to Mari.

Why is that so?

I believe the reason is that Mari mostly posts within a small range of topics. Mari is all about social media and Facebook.

Guy, on the other hand, is famous for doing the opposite. He loves finding interesting stuff across ALL TOPics.

Robert Scoble is somewhere inbetween. He's all about tech startups, gadgets, and a pint of Rackspace. His posts are broader than Mari's, but not as broad as Guy's.

Look at the topics from Guy's last 10 g+ posts today:

Marshmallow Twig Roaster

Graduation Speeches

Yahoo CEO Resume Revelations

Origami

His Google plus book, What the Plus!

A Mother's Day gift for a hockey mom

Apple Inc.

May Day celebrations and protests

A funny pic about Silicon Valley Nerds

A cop pulling over a doughnut truck

People love Guy Kawasaki for the new, funny, and interesting things he finds every day.

Yet, it seems to decrease engagement massively.

The hidden metrics and the ROI of social media marketing.

Likes, comments, and shares are easy to count. They don't help us pay the rent, though. Or the Ferrari. *wink @ Mari* At least not in a way we can measure easily.

From a sales and marketing perspective the most important metric is 'click-throughs.' Clicks to our promotions, clicks to our sites. More click-throughs = more conversions and higher ad revenue.

I don't know the click-throughs for Mari, Robert, and Guy. It might well be that engagement on g+ is low, but the click throughs from up to 2 million followers are high enough!

Conclusions about engagement on Google plus compared to Facebook.

Keep in mind that I'm using 3 randomly picked posts to illustrate my ideas. This is not 'proof' for anything, further study is necessary.

1. Engagement is significantly lower on Google plus. This is a biggie, although Google plus users frequently deny it. Your day has only 24 hours. There are unlimited marketing opportunities out there. You have to evaluate if Google plus is really worth your time.

Chris Brogan has spoken open words in his session at Social Media Success Summit 2012 two days ago. Slightly paraphrasing: "I don't think it's critical to have a Google plus business page. You're not going to have a lot interaction." He recommended that if you engage on Google plus you rather use your personal profile than a business page.

The engagement analyzed in this blog post is from personal profiles. If you did the same analysis for pages, you'd quickly close the book on Google plus and move on to Facebook and LinkedIn.

2. Building a larger audience often results in lower engagement. On any platform. The larger your audience is, the less targeted it is. The more targeted your audience is, the more successful any campaign will be. You don't need to target all the 2 Billion people who have internet. You'll have less work and better results the smaller and more targeted your audience is.

3. If you restrict your posts to a tightly defined topic, you'll get higher engagement. This, too, is about targeted social media marketing. Posting across many different topics will give you lower engagement. Cats and bacon are the exception to the rule.

I'm neither criticizing any of these authors, nor saying bye bye to Google plus. I DO like g+ better. I AM a g+ Ambassador. But Google plus users must stop treating every critic like an idiot or a propagandist paid by Facebook.

Engagement is significantly lower on Google plus, even for celebrities. And for the little guy, like me, and probably you, at g+ there's a lot of time and work needed to get even a tiny bit of response.

I do believe, though, that Google plus will be a success, and I'll cover the 'Why' in a separate post.

Let me finish with a quote from Guy Kawasaki that I picked up today:

"Get on Google plus! Stake your claim! Before it becomes 'downtown Manhattan.' Look at it as investment in the future."<a class="tweet-quote" href="http://twitter.com/?status=Get on Google plus! Stake your claim!

Google Drive is live – and here's another example for fast-food-journalism

Why news journalism is meaningless, Part 6

So, it's Day 1 for Google drive, and +The Next Web proudly presents it's indepth evaluation: it's not a Dropbox killer.

Isn't it kind of silly to evaluate whether it is a dropbox or whatever killer ON DAY ONE?

Just like people stating Google plus isn't a Facebook killer because 850 Million users didn't switch over within the first 3 months.

Positioning Google drive with Apps/docs was a natural progression. Isn't it thinkable that Google will expand from there, and integrate with other services? That, in the end, it will show up everywhere, just like g+ is going to be integrated everywhere? This is how they can bind users to their services.

Once you (=user) have all your stuff in the cloud (=ecosystem), changing services is so much more inconvenient. Google would be outright stupid if they wouldn't go this route. Think Apple's iTunes Match – pure genious in binding files to services and customers to the brand.

My prediction: 5 years from now Dropbox-like storage solutions without applications to actually do things with your stored files will be so dead! Companies who integrate cloud storage with services will be the only ones left.

Back to journalism.

TNW tells us:

"As we reported only a bit ago Google appears to be aiming the service at companies [...] rather than positioning it as a consumer-facing service"

They didn't even bother to read Google's announcement of the service:

"Today, we’re introducing Google Drive—a place where you can create, share, collaborate, and keep all of your stuff. Whether you’re working with a friend on a joint research project, planning a wedding with your fiancé or tracking a budget with roommates, you can do it in Drive."

Doesn't sound like coroporate positioning to me…

Then TheNextWeb gives us a great analysis:

"If Google had come out of the gates with Android and iOS integration, it could still have held a really good chance at unseating Dropbox for some users."

What are you telling us? With Android and iOS integration TODAY they would be a thread to Dropbox, but since they may need another 4 weeks to publish those, Dropbox is save?

The problem is that, in the dire need for attention grabbing content, journalists have to make something of nothing. So they end up evaluating things within the attention span and intellectual depth of an amoeba.

 #journalism #googledrive #ibmm

Google Drive is live, completely replaces Google Docs. Don’t call it a Dropbox killer.

SproutSocial losing competitive advantage?
#socialmedia is a lot about finding great links and sharing them to your social networks.

One of the main reasons why I'm using +HootSuite and +Sprout Social together is that SproutSocial offeres reading and sharing RSS feeds, while HootSuite has a few other perks.

Today HootSuite is catching up, you can now add feeds to your HootSuite streams. SproutSocial is in danger of losing one of its competitive advantages.

A quick test of HootSuite's RSS app shows a few things to be desired though.
1. You can't pre-view feed items, except opening them in separate tabs, which will give you a mess quickly. Then you have to go back to the Hootsuite tab to share the item.
2. You can't connect to Google reader. It allows importing OPML files, which you can use as workaround.

I'll keep SproutSocial, not only because of the feed preview, but because the more streams you watch, the more uncomfortable navigating HootSuite becomes. Scrolling a mile from left to right and back just isn't a nice thing to do. If I remember right, usability tests already found that out 1 1/2 decades ago.

SproutSocial has the advantage of showing all streams in 1 view, and you can quickly select what you want to see by checking and un-checking boxes. Smart.

Question: What is your understanding of the term "Social Business?"

1) A company fully integrating "social" internally and externally.
2) A company (for profit) designed to address a social objective.
3) Or both? Or?

I like to use the term "social business" predominantly with definition #1 per what IBM is doing – see more on this below.

However, "social business" was first defined by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Prof. +Muhammad Yunus to mean #2. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_business

[Update: and see also http://www.socialbusiness.org/]

To me, a social business is a company that is fully integrating social networking and relationship building both internally and externally. It's a company that GETS what it means to be social and is not afraid to embrace open communication among employees, management, vendors and customers. Social businesses are more successful at external social media marketing because of their internal cohesiveness and connections between all employees.

More and more, we're hearing about "social media" evolving into "social business". It's not a standalone component of marketing. Companies like +IBM are leading the way with their training, initiatives and this explanatory section on their website: http://ibm.com/socialbusiness. I like IBM's definition of social business – excerpted from their site:

A social business isn't just a company that has a Facebook page and a Twitter handle. A social business is one that embraces and cultivates a spirit of collaboration and community throughout its organization—both internally and externally.
IBM has identified three distinct characteristics of a social business:
Engaged —deeply connecting people, including customers, employees, and partners, to be involved in productive, efficient ways.
Transparent —removing boundaries to information, experts and assets, helping people align every action to drive business results.
Nimble —speeding up business with information and insight to anticipate and address evolving opportunities.

Your thoughts?

This is the best presentation of what g+ is meant to be that I've seen lately.

Fortunately inteviewer +Rafe Needleman is giving +Vic Gundotra and +Bradley Horowitz enough space to give us their view of g+, instead of hammering the common misconceptions.

As I've said before, g+ is much bigger than the 'Facebook cloning' the mainstream press is focusing on.

[ Sidenote: Yes, Google is still avoiding the question of plus.google.com usage. I believe this adds to the public impression that g+ is a failure more than anything else, but that's Google's choice in favor of the bigger picture. ]

1. As a user – I'm thrilled about the integrated experience; and we're still only at the beginning of it.
2. As an author, biz owner, and marketer – I'm thrilled about getting a platform that spreads over lots of Google's properties, connecting me to my circles across all those properties. (Google property = lots of people)
3. And thinking in Google's shoes for a moment – I'm thrilled about the scope of this project, that in the end will make users spend more time in the Googleverse, make them more connected to the brand, plus adding a few commercial benefits on the side of data, advertising etc.

I don't like everything Google is doing, but g+ is a great concept, in idea as well as in implementation.

Now, take a few minutes to watch +CNET 's video below.
#googleplus #ibmm
